Why Text Gets Cut Off (Even When It Looked Fine On Screen)
Trimming thousands of business cards to size is never perfectly exact — every cutter has a small amount of shift built in, usually a sixteenth of an inch or so. On a card that's only 3.5″ wide to begin with, that tiny shift is enough to slice through a phone number or clip the edge of a logo if it was placed too close to the edge. The fix isn't more careful printing — it's designing with the tolerance built in from the start.
The Two Lines That Actually Matter
Every print-ready business card design works around two boundaries measured from the trim line, not just one:
- Bleed — artwork that extends past the trim edge, so if the cut shifts outward, there's no white sliver at the border.
- Safe zone — an inset line, about 0.125″ in from the trim edge on a standard 3.5″×2″ card, that text and logos should stay behind. If the cut shifts inward, anything inside this line is still fully on the card.

Font Size: How Small Is Too Small?
Keep body text at 6pt or larger. Below that, thin strokes on letters like "e," "a," and "s" can blur together or fill in slightly during printing, especially in lighter font weights. If you're adding a website URL, tagline, or fine print, 7–8pt is a safer floor for anything you want a client to actually read without squinting.
